I just returned from a one day conference, put on by our local Western Washington Chapter of SCBWI. I’m very glad I went, because it is a chance to learn what’s going on in the kid lit industry, see friends I rarely see (owing to the fact that it is really hard to get me off this island) but mostly, I went to see one person in particular, and hear whatever words of wisdom he had to impart.
That person is David Wiesner, whom I consider to be the modern master of the wordless picture book. If you don’t know his work, I suggest you run, not walk to your nearest bookseller, be it your favorite book shop down the street or Amazon. His book Tuesday was probably the single biggest influence on Pandamorphosis I could name.
I also picked up a few other of his books (and yes, I did pay for them!) at the conference, including the wonderful Mr. Wuffles, and if any of you are owned by a cat, you know that Mr. Wiesner knows cats very well indeed.
Of course, I had him sign them all!

I was never into kid lit – even as a kid 🙂 Over recent years, especially having exposure to people like yourself, I’ve come to a whole new appreciation of it and am finally enjoying that part of being a child. Paul has always reread his kid’s books and I’ve never understood why – now I do 🙂

I always read as a child, although we did not own a lot of books. I was definitely a library kid.

I was a library kid too – it’s just I was in the horror section most of the time 🙂
After posting I remembered that I loved Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree and Wishing-Chair series. I’ve still got them somewhere so I may reread them.

I was more Winnie the Pooh and Little House on the Prairie, but hey! Reading is good, no matter what you are reading!
